5 days down, 180 to go.

ClassroomIf you’re a teacher you know what that means. Pre-planning is over and I’ve met my students. All the books are on the desks and ready for Monday morning. Counters are clean and pencils are sharp. Our room is ready.

As in our, I mean my 18 students and I. 18 fourth graders to be exact.

A new year, a new adventure. Learning for them. Learning for me.

I can honestly say I’m ready for this now. Meeting the kids tonight and talking with their parents got me there. If you had asked me a week ago I’d have said no (heck, I was saying no a week ago). I miss my own three little ones dearly when I’m teaching all day. But you want to know something?

I’m a better mother because of it.

That’s right. Being a working mom makes me that much better at being a mom. I appreciate my kids and my family so much more when nights and weekends and holidays are my time for them. Our time together is precious and although it might not be heavy in quantity, it’s heavy in quality.

So come Monday I’ll be spending so much of my time shaping the minds of 9 & 10 year olds while my kids are being loved on by their Nana. But you better believe when 4pm rolls around each day I’ll be heading home to the ones I love.

P.S. Met Tucker’s teacher, Ms. Crenn, today which means I am shopping for school supplies for my own little student now! You can guess what we’ll be doing this weekend to get him ready for his first day of pre-k3 on Tuesday!

    • I cannot imagine teaching that many students or having that many papers to grade! No matter how many times I change grade levels, you better believe it will always be in elementary! Ha! Good luck to you on this new school year as well!

  2. Happy New School Year. I also like showing my children (my girls in particular) that though I am not great at juggling it all I do the best I can and that I enjoy being creative and using my brain outside of mommy things.

    I love Prek!!! Enjoy!

Your room looks great! You’re going to have a wonderful year! I can’t wait to see my 22 4th graders on Monday morning!

    • Thank you! Our 4th grade classes are usually at 22 as well, but this year we are lower, such a nice way to start the year because I know we’ll get new kids coming, we are a pretty transient area. Good luck with your school year, too!

I agree! I am a better mom to my 9 year old (4th grade!) twin girls and 3 year old son because I spend my days with other kids. 🙂 My husband and I both taught for years – now he’s at central office and I’m a media specialist. Quality does matter over quantity!

    • I would love to be a media specialist one day, I think! My mom was an assistant in the media center at another elementary school for almost ten years and really enjoyed it!

  7. JDaniel will be starting next Tuesday in PK-3 too. Eighteen sounds like a lovely number of students.

Thank you for linking to Back to School Traditions!
